Coach Kyle McElvanyCoach Kyle McElvany, better known as "Coach Mac" is a 2005 graduate of St. Mary Catholic Central High School in Monroe, Michigan where he played under the legendary, M.H.S.F.C.A. Hall of Fame Coach, Jack Giarmo, and Hall of Fame coaches Jim Clawson, Rob Hoag, and Scott Hoffman. Coach McElvany would go on to credit much of his career to Coach Jack Giarmo when he named his first born son, Jackson, on August 3 2016. Coach McElvany learned the T offense from Coach Giarmo in the fall of 2003 (Coach McElvany's "Junior Season" of high school) and continues to consult with Coach Giarmo until present day. Coach McElvany has always been quick to credit Coach Jack Giarmo's late brother Gasper Giarmo who was a Head Football Coach at Dundee High School, Byron Center High School, and an assistant at Zeeland West High School (for multiple state championships) and Gasper's son, Matthew Giarmo as other close confidants within the Power-T offense.
Coach McElvany began his coaching career while as a sophomore in high school at St. Michael The Archangel School as Middle School Offensive coach. Once Coach McElvany's playing days ended after graduating from high school in 2005, playing one and a half seasons with the minor league football team Southern Michigan Timberwolves before a severe concussion would end his career, Coach McElvany also spent time scouting for Coach Giarmo and the St. Mary Catholic Central High School football program in 2005. SMCC would go on to reach the State Championship game in 2005 before falling to Kingsley by a score of 31-21. Coach McElvany would proceed to take on his first varsity on-field coaching position at Delta High School (approximately 35 minutes west of Toledo, Ohio) under the legendary Wing-T coach, Mike Vicars in the fall of 2006 at the Varsity Offensive Line Coach and Varsity Defensive Ends Coach (in a 5-2 Angle Defense) at the age of 20 years old. Delta would experience great success during this season as they finished 9-2, sharing the North West Ohio Athletic League Championship, before falling in the first round to Bedford St. Peter Chanel High School in the OHSAA Division 5 State Playoffs. The following season, Coach Vicars would move on to a another school, one which would have been a farther commute for Coach McElvany, so Coach McElvany accepted a position at the Varsity Offensive Line Coach, Offensive Coordinator, Defensive Line Coach, and J.V. Head Coach at Swanton High School which was also a member of the N.W.O.A.L under Ben Ohlemacher who starred at the University of Findlay and was a respected high football coach in the Findlay and Sandusky areas of Ohio. While Swanton battled many challenges to success on the field, Coach McElvany successfully implemented the T offense for the first time in his young career. In August of 2010, just prior to the beginning of the season, Coach Ohlemacher would leave the Swanton High School football program due to a personal matter regarding his family. An interim Head Coach from within the district was named, however that individual struggled with connecting to the personnel of the program and thus Coach McElvany took over as the 2nd Interim Coach of the 2010 season at the age of 24, going 1-3 in the remaining games. Despite having a losing record in those final four contests, several of the individuals from that team hold a yearly "reunion" with Coach McElvany to reminisce, catch up and tell stories. In the spring of 2011, after being passed over for the permanent position of Head Football Coach at Swanton High School, Coach McElvany would land what would turn out to be the best assistant position of his career at the time as the Varsity Offensive Line Coach and Special Teams Coach at Anthony Wayne High School in Whitehouse, Ohio under local, longtime legendary Head Coach Craig Smith. Coach McElvany found himself at home under their high-powered Wing-T offense at the D1 level of high school football in Ohio. In 2011, the Anthony Wayne Generals experienced success, finishing runner up to a league championship but qualifying for the OHSAA Division I State Playoffs by taking on the #1 seed in the OHSAA Playoffs, and the #4 ranked team in the country in the Toledo Whitmer Panthers led by Head Coach Joe Palka in addition to several future Division 1 football players including Chris Wormley (Baltimore Ravens), Storm Norton (Pittsburgh Steelers), Kevin Koger (Pittsburgh Steelers), in addition to several others who played Division I college football but did not make it to the N.F.L. despite a hard fought contest, the Generals would be defeated 22-7 in a game in which the Generals only allowed 1 offensive touchdown! The Generals would go on to compete for the NLL league championship on a yearly basis. In the winter of 2015, Coach McElvany was hired to become the Head Football Coach at Dundee High School in Dundee, Michigan. Approximately 15 minutes from his hometown of Monroe, Michigan. It was a great challenge ahead for Coach McElvany and his staff as Dundee had finished 0-9 in the 2014 season, with 4 Head Coaches in one season, and finishing with 19 players! Coach McElvany and his staff quickly implemented the T offense and would finish the 2015 season with a 5-4 record, including a huge upset win of Hudson High School at their stadium, and missing the playoffs by .7 playoff points. Coach McElvany and his staff would go on to post 3 winning seasons out of 5 at Dundee High School, excluding one season (2017) where they lost 5 games by 1 touchdown or less in the last 2 minutes of the game. Regardless, Coach McElvany took great pride in rebuilding a Dundee Vikings Football program. During his time, the Vikings were named Team Academic All State every season, with a #1 Team GPA in 2019. On two separate occasions (2017 & 2019), the Vikings received the Steve Spicer Leadership Award which recognizes programs for outstanding community service. Following the 2015 season, Coach McElvany was also nominated for and included in the inaugural American Football Coaches Association 30 Under 30 Program which took place in San Antonio, Texas. Coach McElvany was 1 of 3 high school coaches in the country selected for such honors. During his time at Anthony Wayne and Dundee, Coach McElvany also hosted the Great Lakes Football Coaches Clinic and spoke on various offensive and program building topics. He also spoke at regional and online clinics on the topic of Wing-T / Power-T offense and "Developing Relationships with your Community". In collaboration with Dundee Athletic Director, Tom Oestrike, Coach McElvany was also apart of bringing the annual Monroe Victory Day program to Monroe County which gave individuals with severe cognitive disabilities their "day in the sun" to score a touchdown on the game field, participate in various football activities", and be cheered on by the fans and cheerleaders, while the marching band played the fight song! "Wins and losses aside, Victory Day is something I will always be proud of being apart of in my career. The number of lives we impacted on those days, from the participants to our own student-athletes are far more valuable than any trophy we could win" said Coach McElvany. In the winter of 2020, Coach McElvany would leave Dundee to become the Offensive Line Coach and Special Teams Coordinator at his alma mater, St. Mary Catholic Central High School in Monroe. Coach McElvany also serves as the Director of the St. Andre Bessette' Open Doors Inclusion Program which is the first full special education program at any Catholic High School in the state of Michigan! Coach McElvany also serves as the Director of Summer Camps for S.M.C.C. "There wasn't many places that I would consider going back to being an assistant for, but SMCC was at the top of the list. SMCC is home, SMCC is what helped shaped me into the man I am today, and I am honored to be able to give back to the school and community that has helped formed me" said Coach McElvany. Coach McElvany holds Bachelors degrees in Recreation & Leisure Studies and Psychology from the University of Toledo, and Masters Degrees in Special Education from the University of Toledo, and a Graduate Degree in Inclusive Education from the University of Notre Dame. He is currently a member of the University of Notre Dame Alumni Association. Coach McElvany has contributed articles for American Football Monthly, Gridiron Strategies, and the A.F.C.A. manual. Coach McElvany is also a member of the A.F.C.A. Clinic Committee and the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association Board of Directors, in particular working with their Clinic Committee on securing speakers and developing topics for the yearly coaches clinic in Lansing. Coach McElvany is also a growingly popular speaker on the clinic circuit on the topic of the Power-T Offense and Program Building as he spoke in Utah, California, West Virginia, Ohio, and Michigan in off-season of 2022. Coach Kyle McElvany and Coach Spencer Eagle have coaching careers that have spanned across northwest Ohio to southeast Michigan. The common trait between both coaches is developing student-athletes who desire to be "selfless" and relying on their mentorship of Hall of Fame coaches and State Championship winning coaches for the winning keys both on and off the field. |
